Finn's Tale
Julie Sandilands
Thank you to the 'Read Aloud Group' at Dunnekier Day Hospital, Kirkcaldy, for making me welcome and putting me at ease yesterday (29th June). I had a lovely afternoon and was thrilled at the response to Finn's Tale. This initiative is pioneering therapy through the spoken word and it goes to show, we are never too old to be read a good story.
The following comments are from an article by Robert McCrum, The Guardian/Observer.
"Words reveal their power when given voice - listening to the spoken word provides important health benefits, as the hundreds of 'read aloud' groups springing up across the country may demonstrate. As a communal and collaborative experience, reading can be therapeutic. A view, expressed by DH Lawrence, that "one sheds one's sickness in books".
Listening to the spoken word is one of the most profound sources of comfort. The sense of being looked after, nourished and replenished, is like being fed."

BOOK REVIEW - By Allan Tunningley - Westmorland Gazette, 21st July 2011
FINN’S TALE/A GYPSY’S TALE: Julie Sandilands.
Both £5.99 (plus p&p if ordered from the author)
THE first of these self-published books by Julie Sandilands features young Finn,
a boy growing up in a 1960s mining village. It follows his adventures during one autumn when he spends free time exploring Tyndale Wood near his home. There he meets a family of gypsies and discovers the secrets of a local mountain and his own heritage.
The second title, described as a sequel, follows the fortunes of Tyndale
Wood’s Gypsies, after they are driven out and head north, setting up camp in
Appleby, where intrigue and suspense awaits.
Both books are gripping and eminently readable.

Writing, publishing and promoting both books has been a very challenging experience, and yet at no time has it ever felt like the wrong thing to do. My original objective was to share my work.Twelve months on and this objective has been achieved. Thank you to all of you who have shown an interest in my work and supported my endeavour. Your words have given me the encouragement and determination to carry on.
Thank you to Strathallen Primary School , Kirkcaldy for making me feel most welcome. Photos and more information on this event coming soon.
On 24th November, 2011, I visited Falkland School House. The pupils were fantastic and the whole experience was immensely enjoyable. The boys are doing some project work on Finn's Tale. I will post their efforts once completed in the New Year.
Hi Julie,
The boys are engrossed and fascinated with the story (I love it too...it is filled with light and has introduced the boys to it too). In fact, I am looking forward to seeing what they create when we finish the story this week. Anyway, you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year. Blessed be, Kimberley Musson, English Teacher, Falkland House School.
